Universities face staff redundancies amid financial pressures

Higher education institutions are implementing cost-cutting measures and staff redundancies due to rising operational costs and shifting student demographics.

The University of Sunderland has confirmed that teaching and support staff will face redundancies. The institution cited rising costs and regulatory and policy changes as primary drivers of a difficult financial outlook for the higher education sector. The university stated it is working to identify cost reductions while attempting to maintain the student experience.

In Australia, Charles Sturt University has proposed cutting 101 full-time positions by February 2027. The university reported operating in a deficit for the past three years and faces a $70 million backlog in maintenance and infrastructure upgrades. The institution noted that international student enrolments, which stood at 8,500 in 2019, dropped to 1,620 in 2025, contributing to the need for $35 million to achieve financial sustainability.
