Universities grapple with AI: detection tools and AI‑native curricula

Universities across the globe are confronting the surge in generative‑AI use by students. Admissions offices are increasingly deploying AI‑detection software and revising policies, after surveys showed that 97 % of Gen Z students have used AI tools for schoolwork and more than one‑fifth have relied on them for personal‑statement essays. Staff report that essays that are overly polished, generic or cliché often trigger suspicion, and many institutions now screen applications with proprietary AI systems.

At the same time, educators are moving away from “AI‑proof” assignments toward AI‑native teaching models. Proposals such as Andrej Karpathy’s Eureka Labs envision AI as a cognitive sparring partner, with students directing the tool to explore conflicting scenarios and then critically evaluating its output. The approach emphasizes process‑level assessment, transparency logs and metacognitive reflection, aiming to retain student agency while leveraging AI’s capabilities.
