Universities launch new academic year with focus on AI
Universities in the United States and the Netherlands have commenced their new academic years with a focus on governance and the integration of artificial intelligence.
The University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) held its 2026 Convocation, establishing ‘Critical Thinking in the Age of AI’ as the academic theme. President Jen Cushman encouraged students to use AI tools with curiosity while maintaining independent thought and questioning information sources. The event also recognized 52 Rising Scholars for academic excellence and honored faculty members Dr. Zachary Roth and Dr. Gwen Bedell Gadbois with distinguished awards.
At Maastricht University, the University Council began its new term by introducing new student and faculty council members. The Council announced that priority groups will focus on sustainability, student wellbeing, and the use of AI in education. Additionally, the Council will assist in developing the university’s strategic programme for the next five years and address issues regarding academic freedom and social safety.
