University academic updates in Portugal

The University of Madeira is hosting a seminar titled “40 Years of the Basic Law of the Educational System: between legacy and possible futures.” Scheduled for October 19, the event features the Rector of the University of Madeira, the Representative of the Republic for the Autonomous Region of Madeira, and the Regional Secretary of Education, Science, and Technology. The seminar, which holds the high patronage of the President of the Republic, includes conferences and roundtables focusing on autonomy, regionalization, European integration, and the future of education in the Madeira region.

Meanwhile, the University of Beira Interior (UBI) has officially marked the start of the 2026/2027 academic year. The university reported a 10% increase in new student enrollments compared to the previous year, with 1,470 new students and 279 international students filling all available spots. To support this growth, UBI is implementing pedagogical modernizations, such as renewing its Moodle platform, and addressing student housing needs, including the planned reopening of Residence 1 to provide 125 beds.
