University at Buffalo researchers develop injectable hydrogel for osteoarthritis
Researchers at the University at Buffalo have developed an injectable hydrogel designed to extend the effectiveness of osteoarthritis treatments. Current joint injections, such as corticosteroids or analgesics, are often short-lived because medications are rapidly cleared from the synovial fluid.
The new platform utilizes a liquid formulation that, upon reaching body temperature, transforms into a smooth, lubricating semi-solid depot within the joint. This depot acts as a reservoir, using drug-loaded nanocarriers to gradually release therapeutic compounds over several weeks. This method aims to keep medication concentrated in the joint, addressing the challenge of delivering poorly soluble drugs without increasing systemic exposure.
