University at Buffalo study finds decline in risky drug use among seniors with dementia
A study from the University at Buffalo indicates a decline in the use of potentially inappropriate medicines among older Americans with cognitive disorders. Between 2011 and 2022, the percentage of adults aged 65 and older with cognitive disorders exposed to at least one problematic medicine fell from 39.3% to 29.3%.
The research focused on drugs acting on the brain and nervous system, such as certain benzodiazepines and sleep aids, which can exacerbate confusion, sleepiness, falls, or memory issues in older populations. The study utilized the American Geriatrics Society Beers Criteria to identify these risks.
To manage these risks, health professionals may utilize “deprescribing,” a process of carefully reducing doses, stopping unnecessary medications, or replacing them with safer alternatives under medical supervision.
