University bicycle initiatives face different outcomes in Canada and US

The University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) in Canada has launched a sustainability initiative to repurpose abandoned bicycles left by former student residents. Supported by the Province of British Columbia and the GoByBike BC Society, the program involves repairing unclaimed bikes and distributing them free of charge to students facing financial barriers to transportation.

In contrast, UC Santa Cruz in the United States is facing the potential early termination of its five-year agreement with the e-bike rental service BCycle. The company has requested an increased annual financial guarantee, citing rising operating costs and damage to bikes and docking stations. While the service is expected to continue operating elsewhere in Santa Cruz County, students may lose access to campus stations if contract negotiations fail.
