University Center Pitești professors detained for alleged bribery

Two professors from the University Center Pitești, part of the Polytechnic University of Bucharest, have been detained following investigations into alleged bribery. The suspects, identified as Alin Gheorghiță Mazăre and Gheorghe Șerban, are being investigated by the Argeș Tribunal Prosecutor's Office.

Prosecutors allege that in August 2026, Mazăre requested and received 700 lei from a student to illegally facilitate passing an exam. Additionally, Mazăre is accused of acting as an intermediary, collecting various sums including 200 lei and 250 euro from eight different students to ensure the illegal passing of exams for Șerban. These funds were allegedly transferred directly to Șerban.

On September 9, law enforcement executed four search warrants, including one at the Faculty of Electronics, Communications, and Computers. The dean of the faculty, Laurențiu Mihai Ionescu, confirmed the police presence but stated he was not interviewed and had no knowledge of the specific details regarding the ongoing investigation.
