University Clinic for Psychiatry reports rise in domestic violence stress cases

The University Clinic for Psychiatry has observed an increase in patients seeking help for psychological stress related to domestic or intimate partner violence. According to a retrospective review of electronic health records from the ‘Moj Termini’ system for the period between January 2025 and July 2026, 101 cases were recorded in the first seven months of 2026, compared to 79 cases throughout the entirety of 2025.

Professor Dr. Slavica Arsova presented these findings during the International Conference on Forensic Psychiatry 2026 in Ohrid. The data shows the highest number of cases in 2026 occurred in March (27), April (23), and June (21). This period coincides with a tragic incident in Skopje involving a mother and child.

Dr. Arsova noted that the increase in recorded cases does not necessarily indicate a rise in violence within society. Instead, the trend may reflect improved recognition, better documentation, or more effective patient referrals to health institutions. Medical professionals are encouraged to systematically document the type and duration of violence and follow protocols for involving relevant authorities to ensure patient safety.
