University Clinical Center Niš performs first cryoablation
The University Clinical Center (UKC) Niš has successfully performed its first cryoablation for atrial fibrillation, a minimally invasive procedure used to treat heart rhythm disorders. This technique utilizes extremely low temperatures to create electrical isolation in the pulmonary veins, blocking the irregular impulses that cause the condition.
This development allows patients in southern and southeastern Serbia to access advanced cardiac care locally, reducing the need to travel to major medical centers in Belgrade or Sremska Kamenica. The procedure was performed at the Cardiology Clinic by Dr. Predrag Cvetković and Dr. Miroslav Nikolić, under the mentorship of Dr. M. Tomović from the National Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases 'Dedinje'.
Medical officials, including UKC Niš Director Dr. Milan Lazarević and Cardiology Clinic Head Dr. Boris Đinđić, noted that the introduction of this complex electrophysiology method represents a significant advancement for regional healthcare and the continuous development of complex treatment methods at the facility.
