University elections yield major results in Venezuela and Chile

In Venezuela, the Plataforma Impulsores de la Transformación Universitaria, led by Professor Virgilio Castillo, secured a significant victory in the faculty elections at the Universidad de Los Andes (ULA). According to the Central Electoral Commission, Castillo’s group obtained 47.66% of the votes, doubling the support of the second-place candidate, Professor María Teresa Celis, who received 21.26%. Professor Gustavo Alcántara was also elected as a primary counselor to the University Council.

In Chile, the student federation elections at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (FEUC) have moved to a second round. Two leftist coalitions, Nueva Acción Universitaria (NAU) and Amanecer, advanced to the runoff after the first round held on October 6 and 7. NAU led with 33.45% of the vote, while Amanecer followed with 24.89%. The runoff election to determine the federation leadership for 2027 is scheduled for October 20 and 21.
