University for Development Studies launches waste management academic initiative
The University for Development Studies (UDS) is collaborating with academic institutions across Africa and Europe to develop new postgraduate programmes focused on waste management. The initiative aims to address waste challenges in West Africa by equipping students with practical skills in recycling, waste reduction, and sustainable management.
As part of the European Union co-funded WARM Project, the UDS Energy Technology Centre hosted a four-day workshop in Tamale for researchers and lecturers from Ghana, Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone, Italy, Portugal, and Romania. Coordinated by Dr. Hilla Limann Technical University, the project involves ten institutions working to strengthen regional education and research.
Professor Hamidatu Saaka Darimani, Vice Chancellor of the University for Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS), noted that while governments are making efforts, there is a significant lack of technical expertise. The project seeks to develop an innovative MSc curriculum that emphasizes practical application, aiming to transform waste from a problem into a valuable resource.
