Argentina university march protests against Milei austerity
The Fifth Federal University March saw massive nationwide demonstrations across Argentina, with organizers estimating nearly one million participants. Students, faculty, and workers marched to demand the full implementation of the University Financing Law and to protest against President Javier Milei’s austerity measures, which they argue threaten the future of public higher education.
A central point of contention is the 2027 budget. The National Council of Universities (CIN) estimates that 9.7 trillion pesos are required to comply with the law, while the government’s current proposal allocates only 7.2 trillion pesos. This funding gap has led to significant tension, including claims of salary debts and the erosion of research capabilities.
In Buenos Aires, the protests turned violent near the Congress, resulting in clashes between demonstrators and security forces. Reports indicate the use of tear gas and water cannons, which affected both protesters and several national deputies. Government officials, including Chief of Cabinet Diego Santilli and Chamber of Deputies President Martín Menem, condemned the violence, accusing certain groups of attempting to destabilize the administration. Conversely, university authorities and opposition leaders criticized the heavy-handed police response and the government's refusal to honor judicial rulings regarding university funding.
