University Hospital Copenhagen study links statins to lower dementia risk
A study conducted by researchers at the University Hospital Copenhagen suggests that statin therapy may help prevent dementia in individuals with type 2 diabetes. The research analyzed data from over 132,000 people using Danish health registries, focusing on those diagnosed with type 2 diabetes between 2006 and 2019.
The findings indicate that the timing of statin treatment is significant. Participants who began statin therapy within the first year following their diabetes diagnosis showed an estimated 15 percent lower risk of developing dementia after ten years compared to those without statin therapy. During the study's average observation period of 7.1 years, 2.7 percent of the total participant group developed dementia.
