University hospitals deploy advanced robotic surgery systems

Medical institutions in Germany and Switzerland are advancing the use of robotic-assisted surgery through the implementation of new technology.

At the University Hospital Dresden, the Da Vinci SP (Single Port) system has been successfully deployed. This technology allows surgeons to introduce a camera and three instruments through a single access point, facilitating precise movements in anatomically narrow regions. The hospital currently utilizes four robotic systems to support various surgical fields, including visceral, thoracic, and vascular surgery.

Similarly, the University Hospital Zurich has integrated the latest generation of robotic systems, the da Vinci 5, to enhance thoracic surgery. The hospital has implemented a ‘One-Stop-Shop’ concept where robotic-assisted navigation bronchoscopy is used to biopsy suspected lung tumors, followed immediately by surgical removal under the same anesthesia. This approach aims to reduce patient recovery time and eliminate the need for multiple anesthetic sessions.
