University Medicine Mainz launches UM.Core clinical data platform
University Medicine Mainz (UM) has established UM.Core, a comprehensive clinical data repository designed to consolidate patient information from various IT systems for routine clinical use. As one of the first German university hospitals to implement such a platform, UM aims to eliminate information gaps and provide medical staff with a consistent overview of patient treatment progress.
The platform serves a large-scale facility comprising over 60 clinics and institutes across 11 departments, treating approximately 395,000 patients annually. By utilizing a patient-centered approach, the project seeks to break down data silos created by heterogeneous specialized systems.
Technologically, the project relies on international open standards to ensure long-term data sovereignty and interoperability. The architecture uses openEHR for permanent data storage and FHIR for structured data transmission. The system is implemented through a European consortium including x-tention, which operates the repository as a managed service in a certified private health cloud, alongside technology partners Better and Tieto Caretech.
