University of Adelaide researchers convert urea into hydrazine for energy storage
Researchers at the University of Adelaide have developed an electrochemical method to convert urea into hydrazine, a chemical vital for pharmaceuticals, rocket fuel, and electric vehicle batteries. The study, published in Nature Synthesis, utilizes electricity and sodium chloride to drive the reaction.
Unlike conventional industrial synthesis methods that rely on hazardous chemicals and high energy consumption, this new approach offers a potentially greener and more economical alternative. The researchers demonstrated that the process is versatile, achieving high yields using pure urea, urea-rich wastewater, and human urine.
While the method shows promise for sustainable fuel production and long-duration space missions, Dr. Pengtang Wang noted that practical engineering challenges remain, such as salt accumulation and the costs associated with product isolation and continuous system operation.
