University of Akron fan to call plays in viral football promotion

The University of Akron has launched a viral promotional contest titled ‘Offensive Coordinator of the Game’ for its home opener against Robert Morris on Sept. 12. The initiative, proposed by athletic director Andrew Goodrich, allows a fan to call an entire offensive series, consisting of 12 to 24 plays.

The promotion has become a significant public relations and revenue success, generating 23 million social media views and attracting an influx of new season ticket-holders. Marty Whims II, a longtime season ticket-holder and CFO of Stark Enterprises, was announced as the contest winner.

Head coach Joe Moorhead noted that while the promotion has gained widespread attention, he intends to ensure the event remains respectful to the game and the opponent, stating, ‘I’m not going to let the circus roll into town.’
