University of Alabama at Birmingham names David Standaert VP of Research

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has appointed David Standaert, M.D., Ph.D., as its new vice president for research. The appointment follows a national search process.

Standaert, who has served as the chair of UAB’s Department of Neurology since 2011, will join President Ray Watts’ cabinet. In his new capacity, he will oversee the university’s research strategy, operations, and growth, providing support to investigators, research centers, and core facilities throughout the institution.

Since joining UAB in 2006, Standaert has been instrumental in expanding the neurology department and advancing research into Parkinson’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. He holds the John N. Whitaker Endowed Chair in Neurology and brings decades of experience in faculty recruitment and securing federal and philanthropic funding to his new leadership role.
