University of Alabama System implements tenure reviews and faculty senate restrictions
The University of Alabama System trustees have unanimously approved new rules that place all tenured professors across the system’s three campuses under a mandatory five-year performance review. This new policy, which includes a peer review component, establishes consequences for faculty members who fail to meet performance standards.
Additionally, the trustees voted to bar faculty senates from speaking on behalf of their respective universities. These changes implement HB 580, a higher education reform bill passed by the Alabama Legislature this spring, ahead of its official October 1 effective date. The rules apply to the University of Alabama, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
Chancellor Sid Trant stated that the measures are intended to strengthen academic quality and ensure institutional accountability, noting that the changes align with the system’s commitment to student success and the state's legislative mandates.
