University of Algarve launches accessible path at Roman Ruins of Milreu

The University of Algarve (UAlg) is leading a restoration project at the Roman Ruins of Milreu in Estoi, Faro, Portugal. The scheme, called “Percurso de Visita Acessível e Enquadramento Paisagístico”, is coordinated by landscape architects Ana Paula Gomes da Silva and Sónia Talhé Azambuja and aims to create a continuous, comfortable, safe and wheelchair‑friendly route for visitors with reduced mobility.

Funded by the EU‑backed Recovery and Resilience Plan, the works include new ramps, pavements, benches, a re‑positioned access to the Interpretive Centre and protective barriers to keep visitors from stepping on sensitive mosaics and walls. The total investment is about €993,820 (plus VAT), and the project seeks to balance archaeological conservation with universal accessibility and improved visitor experience.
