University of Antofagasta validates reuse of decommissioned solar modules
The Solar Circular project, led by the Energy Development Center of the University of Antofagasta (CDEA-UA), has successfully completed its second phase by validating three applications for reusing decommissioned photovoltaic modules.
Real-world pilot programs were implemented in the agricultural sector, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and sustainable housing. These tests evaluated the performance of second-life solar panels and established diagnostic and repair protocols to ensure safety and efficiency. The initiative aims to extend the lifespan of components discarded by solar plants and energy companies, reducing waste and promoting a circular economy for solar technology, including electrochemical batteries and thermal solar salts.
