University of Arizona study links talking to pets with mental well-being

Researchers at the University of Arizona have developed AURAL-Pet, a system designed to analyze daily interactions between humans and their pets, such as dogs and cats. The study, published in Frontiers in Psychiatry, examines how verbal communication with animals—including narrating thoughts, describing pet behavior, or discussing future plans—relates to the mental health and well-being of both owners and animals.

By analyzing 5,072 recordings from 240 participants using electronically activated recorders, the system identified 30 variables to distinguish specific bonding behaviors. The research suggests that attributing human emotions and intentions to animals may be associated with higher levels of empathy and attachment in pet owners.
