Cornell University student granted anonymity in sexual assault lawsuit

A New York judge has ruled that the plaintiff in a civil lawsuit against Cornell University and seven former members of the Chi Phi fraternity may remain anonymous. The plaintiff, identified in court documents as ‘Jane Doe’, alleges she was drugged and gang-raped at a fraternity house in 2024.

Judge Phaedra F. Perry-Bond granted the anonymity protections to prevent potential retaliation, social and professional harm, and threats to the plaintiff’s family. The ruling requires court filings to redact sensitive personal information. While the defendants may privately share identifying information with necessary third parties for their defense, they must maintain strict confidentiality.

The judge also warned that cyberstalking, harassment, or threats against the plaintiff, the defendants, or their attorneys could result in criminal prosecution. The decision focuses on privacy protections and does not address the merits of the sexual assault allegations or the liability of the defendants, all of whom have denied the claims.
