University of Athens develops rapid test for mosquito-borne viruses
A research team from the University of Athens, led by Professor Maria Gazouli, is participating in the SURVIVE-VBD European research program to develop a rapid diagnostic test for mosquito-borne viruses. The project, funded by EU4Health with a 4 million euro budget, aims to create a point-of-care device that uses a single drop of blood to provide results in under one hour.
The technology utilizes graphene biosensors to distinguish between four major viruses: West Nile, Dengue fever, Zika, and Chikungunya. Beyond immediate detection, the program includes epidemiological surveillance that integrates diagnostic results with environmental data.
The initiative comes amid a significant rise in West Nile virus cases in Greece, which has recorded 232 cases and 19 deaths. The research team includes scientists from Italy, Spain, Estonia, the Netherlands, and Brazil. The program is scheduled to begin on October 1, 2026, and is expected to last three years, with results potentially reaching the market within approximately two years of completion.
