University of Athens scientists develop rapid test for West Nile virus

Scientists at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) are developing a portable, rapid diagnostic point-of-care test to detect the West Nile virus. Led by Professor Maria Gazouli, the research aims to create a device that can provide results in less than one hour using only a single drop of blood.

The test utilizes advanced graphene biosensors and is designed to differentiate between four major mosquito-borne viruses: West Nile, Dengue fever, Zika, and Chikungunya. This international research initiative is part of a large European program involving partners from Spain, Estonia, Italy, the Netherlands, and Brazil.

The development comes amid a recent rise in West Nile virus cases in Greece, particularly in the Attica region. Experts note that the climate crisis, mild winters, and globalization have created favorable conditions for the survival and spread of invasive mosquito species. While the virus poses a significant risk of serious complications for the elderly and immunocompromised individuals, children are generally considered to be at lower risk.
