University of Benghazi reopens after 11-year closure

The University of Benghazi has officially reopened its main campus following a comprehensive three-year reconstruction project. The reopening marks the return of academic activities to the institution after it had been closed for more than 11 years due to conflict-related damage.

The reconstruction was managed by the Libyan Development and Reconstruction Fund, led by Belqasim Haftar. The project included the rehabilitation of academic and administrative buildings, service facilities, infrastructure, and the central library. Specific faculties such as Engineering, Arts, Law, Science, and Languages were among those restored. The project also involved upgrading campus roads and equipping classrooms and laboratories with modern specifications.

Libyan Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Al-Mahdi Shoaib Al-Saiti, described the reopening as a significant milestone in restoring the country's educational institutions. The ceremony was attended by various Libyan figures, diplomats, and international delegations, including Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar.
