University of Birmingham researchers explain how the body eliminates fat

Researchers from the University of Birmingham have explained the biological process of how body fat is eliminated during weight loss. When the body enters a calorie deficit, it triggers lipolysis, a process where stored triglycerides are broken down into fatty acids to meet energy demands.

These fatty acids are transported to the mitochondria, where they undergo beta-oxidation to produce energy. This metabolic process results in two primary byproducts: carbon dioxide and water.

Contrary to common belief, the majority of fat is not excreted through sweat. According to researcher calculations, approximately 84 percent of the fat lost is converted into carbon dioxide and expelled through the lungs during exhalation, while the remaining 16 percent is converted into water and excreted through sweat or other bodily fluids.
