University of Bologna launches coastal resilience project in Cesenatico

The University of Bologna’s Department of Architecture has launched ‘Abitare la costa fragile’ (Inhabiting the Fragile Coast), a public engagement project focused on the Romagna coastline. Using Cesenatico as a primary case study, the initiative aims to address environmental and climatic vulnerabilities, including coastal erosion and rising sea levels.

The project, part of the CARTA laboratory, seeks to create a model for socio-ecological transition by bringing together academic researchers, local administrations, economic operators, and citizens. Key objectives include addressing demographic shifts, housing issues for permanent residents, and the repurposing of aging tourism infrastructure. A central component of the project is the development of an ‘adaptive urban room,’ a physical and digital space designed to provide accessible data, maps, and planning tools for coastal reconversion.
