University of Bologna releases octopuses to combat blue crab invasion

The University of Bologna has launched the OCTO-BLU research project to combat the invasive blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) in the Adriatic Sea. The invasive species is causing significant economic damage to shellfish farming by using its powerful claws to break clam shells. Regional estimates place losses at 16.8 million euros between Goro and Comacchio, while Coldiretti estimates national losses could reach 200 million euros.

Led by Professor Oliviero Mordenti, the project utilizes biological control by releasing common octopus (Octopus vulgaris), a natural predator of Mediterranean crustaceans. Since June, approximately 80,000 specimens have been released, with a goal to reach 160,000 by the end of August. To improve survival rates, researchers have placed artificial concrete and clay shelters near submerged reefs to help the young cephalopods establish stable populations along the coast. The program is scheduled to continue through late 2026.
