University of Bristol researchers identify hidden cause of hypertension

Researchers at the University of Bristol have identified a method to better detect a hidden cause of high blood pressure: primary aldosteronism. This condition occurs when the adrenal glands produce excessive amounts of the hormone aldosterone, disrupting the body's salt and water balance. It is estimated to affect up to one in five people with hypertension, significantly increasing the risk of stroke, heart disease, and diabetes.

Using a wearable device called U-RHYTHM, researchers monitored 60 patients over 24-hour periods. The device, which is roughly the size of a mobile phone and worn around the waist, measures hormone levels directly through the skin every twenty minutes. This continuous monitoring revealed that aldosterone levels fluctuate significantly, even during sleep.

These findings suggest that traditional, single-point blood tests may provide inaccurate results if taken at the wrong time, potentially leading to a false sense of security in patients. The ability to collect data during everyday activities and sleep helps avoid the artificial effects of a clinical or hospital environment.
