University of Buenos Aires to award Lionel Messi Doctor Honoris Causa
The University of Buenos Aires (UBA) has unanimously decided to award Lionel Messi its highest honorary title, Doctor Honoris Causa. The distinction recognizes his sporting career and his role as an ambassador of Argentine national identity and culture.
The ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, October 6, at the Monumental Stadium. The presentation will take place just before Messi’s farewell match with the Argentina national team against Benin, marking the end of his more than two-decade international career.
UBA Rector Ricardo Gelpi stated that the honor recognizes Messi as a “humble, persevering person, example and ambassador of our popular culture.” The university highlighted his leadership in securing multiple major titles, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the 2021 and 2024 Copa América, and the 2022 Finalissima. Messi retires as Argentina’s all-time leader in appearances (207), goals (125), and assists (68).
