University of California faculty warn of declining student preparedness

More than 1,100 faculty members within the University of California (UC) system have signed an open letter warning of significant gaps in the foundational knowledge of incoming freshmen. The issue extends beyond mathematics to include literacy challenges in literature programs.

At UC Berkeley, approximately 20% to 30% of students in introductory calculus courses are reported to have “serious gaps in foundational knowledge.” Mathematics professor Zvezdelina Stankova noted that some students appear to be five to eight years behind their expected level, requiring instruction on basic fractions and algebra during sessions intended for advanced topics like integrals.

Data suggests a decline in academic readiness following the UC system's decision in 2020 to stop requiring SAT and ACT scores for admissions. Before 2020, roughly 71% of students were deemed ready for Calculus I; however, that figure dropped to 44% during the 2021-2023 period.
