University of California researchers find way to reverse brain cell aging

Researchers at the University of California, Irvine, have reported significant results in reversing certain signs of brain cell aging using a combination of EGCG from green tea and vitamin B3 (nicotinamide). According to a study published in the journal GeroScience, laboratory experiments showed that this combination could restore several functions in aged neurons within 16 to 24 hours.

Key findings from the study include the rapid restoration of cellular energy, with GTP levels in aged neurons returning to levels typical of young cells after just 16 hours. The combination also improved the removal of toxic proteins, such as accumulated amyloid beta, and enhanced the cells' natural cleaning mechanisms through autophagy. Additionally, scientists observed an approximately 22% improvement in the viability of aged brain cells.

While these results are promising for research into neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's disease, the study was conducted on neurons derived from mice, including those genetically modified for Alzheimer's research. Further studies are required to confirm whether these effects translate to humans.
