University of Cambridge proposes CosmoCube lunar satellite
Researchers at the University of Cambridge have proposed CosmoCube, a suitcase-sized satellite designed to orbit the Moon to detect ancient 21-centimeter radio signals. The mission aims to investigate the “cosmic dark ages,” a period lasting approximately 150 million years between the Big Bang and the formation of the first stars.
To avoid terrestrial interference from FM radio, telecommunications, and satellites, the satellite is intended to operate from the far side of the Moon, which acts as a natural shield. This environment allows for the detection of exceptionally faint signals emitted by hydrogen atoms that existed before the “Cosmic Dawn.” The project is being developed by an international group of scientists, with a potential launch targeted within the next five years.
