University of Canberra Vice-Chancellor proposes UC and CIT merger
University of Canberra (UC) Vice-Chancellor Bill Shorten has publicly proposed a merger between the University of Canberra and the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT). Shorten argues that combining the two institutions would create a single, more competitive post-high school education provider for the Canberra community.
The proposal follows the resignation of CIT CEO Margot McNeill and comes as CIT faces significant financial challenges, including a projected $28 million deficit for 2025. Shorten suggests that a merger would reduce duplication, create efficiencies, and allow for cheaper course offerings by leveraging the research strengths of UC and the industry engagement of CIT.
Discussions regarding an amalgamation have a historical precedent in the region. A 2011 review by Denise Bradley recommended the merger to address inefficient competition and duplication between the two institutions. Shorten noted that UC is currently in a strong position to pursue this move, having returned to a surplus following increased enrolments.
