University of Chicago student accused of sexual assault

A lawsuit filed in Cook County Circuit Court alleges that Kevin Shim, a sophomore at the University of Chicago and member of the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity, sexually assaulted a 19-year-old woman on February 7.

The unnamed plaintiff, referred to as Jane Doe, alleges that Shim provided her with a shot that left her lightheaded before taking her to a secluded bedroom. The complaint states that Shim made nonconsensual sexual advances while the victim was unable to physically or verbally refuse, and that he refused her pleas to use a condom.

Reports from the Chicago Maroon indicate that Shim’s social life on campus continued uninterrupted for months following the alleged incident. He reportedly attended classes, posed for photos with fraternity members, and appeared on invitations to social events, including a party co-hosted with the Delta Gamma sorority, until the lawsuit became public on October 19.
