University of Chicago tops free speech rankings amid NYC protest tensions

A new report from the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) ranks 261 American colleges on free speech, revealing that nearly half of the institutions received an ‘F’ grade. The University of Chicago secured the top position with a score of 81, while New York University ranked last. According to the report, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict remains the most difficult subject for students to discuss openly on campus, a trend that has persisted for three years.

In New York City, tensions regarding local issues have also manifested through controversial rhetoric. In the Chelsea neighborhood, flyers opposing a housing redevelopment project have utilized antisemitic tropes and anti-Zionist language. Some materials have targeted the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) projects, using slogans that link the redevelopment to the Nakba and accusing ‘Zionist money’ of influencing local housing policy.
