University of Chile launches Antonio Skármeta Ibero-American Literature Prize

The University of Chile has announced the launch of the Antonio Skármeta Ibero-American Literature Prize. This new literary award aims to support new generations of writers and strengthen cultural ties across Ibero-American nations.

The inaugural call for entries focuses on narrative works, specifically short stories or novels. It is open to authors under the age of 40 from any Ibero-American country who have released their first printed publication within the last two years. A five-member jury, including at least two international guests, will evaluate the submissions. Winners will receive a 10,000 dollar prize and a diploma from the university.

The prize honors Antonio Skármeta, the renowned author of ‘The Postman’ (El cartero de Neruda), who passed away in October 2024. Skármeta, a former student and professor at the University of Chile, was a recipient of the 2014 National Prize for Literature in Chile.
