University of Cincinnati implements safety measures after campus shootings

The University of Cincinnati and local authorities are responding to a series of shootings near campus that occurred between August 24 and September 1, 2026. The violence included a double-shooting on the university’s Medical Campus on September 1, which resulted in one death and one injury.

In response to the incidents, Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval announced emergency measures, including increased police patrols, street closures, and additional lighting around the campus area. The Cincinnati Police Department has doubled patrols in areas with high late-night activity and implemented barricades and overnight road closures on sections of Calhoun Street.

University of Cincinnati Chief of Police Eliot K. Isaac stated that the university is concentrating resources to strengthen safety and is working closely with municipal police. While the university notes that the Cincinnati Police Department maintains primary jurisdiction over off-campus incidents, officials describe campus safety as a “shared responsibility.” Local parents have expressed frustration, with some launching petitions to demand greater accountability from both university leadership and city officials.
