University of Coimbra develops AI app to prevent physician burnout

Researchers at the University of Coimbra are developing a mobile application designed to monitor and mitigate psychological burnout among medical residents. Led by the Institute of Medical Psychology at the Faculty of Medicine, the project, known as RESOUT, aims to address high levels of stress, anxiety, and depression within the medical profession.

Previous studies by the university indicate that burnout prevalence among medical residents can exceed 40%, with the highest levels of stress occurring during residency. Research has also identified a link between burnout, reduced empathy, and an increased risk of medical errors. Additionally, personality traits such as perfectionism have been shown to indirectly impact work quality and well-being through the mediation of burnout.

The application, named ZENU, utilizes artificial intelligence algorithms to analyze data collected via questionnaires regarding users' feelings, behaviors, and general health. By identifying individual risk profiles, the app intends to provide early intervention and support to help maintain the quality of healthcare services.
