University of Coimbra faces investigation over antisemitism allegations
The Portuguese Secretary of State for Higher Education has requested the Attorney General, Amadeu Guerra, to order an investigation into allegations of antisemitism, discrimination, and incitement to hatred and violence at the University of Coimbra.
The request follows reports of antisemitic posters, stickers, and graffiti appearing in various faculties, including Science and Technology, Law, Medicine, and Chemistry, between July 2024 and May 2026. Alleged content included slogans targeting Zionists and the display of Hezbollah flags and images supporting Hamas.
A doctoral student, Bar Harel, reported receiving death threats, including the message ‘your family deserves a second Holocaust’. The communication of these facts to the Public Ministry was made under the mandatory duty to report criminal relevance.
