University of Colima researchers develop anthropometric protocol for amputees
Researchers from the University of Colima have developed a standardized dossier for anthropometric measurements specifically for individuals with unilateral lower-limb amputations, both with and without prostheses. The protocol, endorsed by the International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry (ISAK), allows for consistent measurements to be performed globally.
The project was led by researchers Lenin Tlamatini Barajas Pineda and Pedro Julián Flores Moreno from the University of Colima, alongside Ricardo López García from the Autonomous University of Nuevo León. It is one of only three projects worldwide funded by ISAK in 2025.
The initiative originated from the need to accurately assess the body composition of a Paralympic athlete from Colima. Standard protocols proved ineffective for measuring muscle and fat levels in individuals missing a limb. In addition to the measurement dossier, the researchers are working on a specific equation to predict body fat for this population.
