University of Colima researchers study diet and exercise for SOMP
Researchers at the University of Colima are conducting a multidisciplinary study to develop management strategies for Poliendocrino Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (SOMP). The condition, a hormonal disorder affecting approximately one in five women, can manifest through acne, insulin resistance, irregular menstruation, and excessive hair growth.
Led by Leticia Velázquez Berrueta and Dr. Pedro Flores Moreno, the project titled ‘Intervención en Mujeres con SOMP’ aims to evaluate the efficacy of diet and exercise as central components of treatment. Building on previous findings that exercise improved body composition and insulin levels, this new phase will incorporate the DASH diet—characterized by low sodium and high intake of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
The study involves 18 women aged 18 to 30 who have received a formal diagnosis from specialists. Participants will follow an eight-week program combining the DASH diet with personalized physical exercise.
