University of Cologne researchers link metabolism to immune regulation

Researchers at the University of Cologne have identified a key mechanism involving metabolism that regulates the immune response in the gut. The study highlights the role of cardiolipin, a specific lipid molecule located within the mitochondria of cells, in maintaining the stability and functionality of regulatory T cells.

These regulatory T cells act as a braking system for the immune system to prevent uncontrolled inflammation. When cardiolipin is lacking, these cells lose energy and stability, becoming stressed and contributing to the development of chronic inflammation. The findings suggest that the internal metabolic state of immune cells is a critical factor in how the body responds to disease, potentially explaining why inflammatory responses vary significantly between individuals.
