University of Costa Rica faces pressure over professor disciplinary case

Costa Rican Deputy Ariel Mora is calling on the University of Costa Rica (UCR) to complete the disciplinary process against professor Diego Alexander Ugalde Fajardo. The investigation follows offensive remarks made by Ugalde against President Laura Fernández during a demonstration at the Plaza de la Democracia on August 6.

The UCR has distanced itself from the professor's comments, stating they are incompatible with the respect required in public debate and the values of a university institution. While the School of Teacher Training has confirmed that a disciplinary procedure has been initiated and referred to the Labor Relations Board, Ugalde continues to work as a full-time interim professor.

Mora emphasized that while he respects university autonomy, it should not be used to facilitate impunity. He demanded that the investigation reach its final legal consequences to ensure accountability for an institution funded by public resources.
