Universidad Nacional de Córdoba awards Lucrecia Martel Doctor Honoris Causa
The Universidad Nacional de Córdoba (UNC) will confer the honorific title Doctor Honoris Causa on Argentine filmmaker Lucrecia Martel. The university council approved the award unanimously on 28 July after a joint proposal from the faculties of Arts, Social Sciences, and Philosophy & Humanities. A public ceremony is scheduled for 14 August, preceded by an open meeting with students on 13 August.
UNC highlighted Martel’s distinguished artistic and intellectual career, noting that her films address social inequality, memory, colonialism, gender issues, environmental concerns, and the rights of indigenous peoples. The university also recognized her essay work, the 2025 book “Un destino común,” and her recent documentary “Nuestra tierra,” which explores the killing of indigenous activist Javier Chocobar in Tucumán. Decanas Alicia Cáceres and Alejandra Castro emphasized that Martel’s oeuvre contributes to contemporary thinking and promotes critical reflection on human‑rights and cultural topics.
