University of Crete hosts inaugural Research Night

The University of Crete hosted its inaugural Research Night, a large-scale event held simultaneously across its campuses in Rethymno and Heraklion. The initiative aimed to bridge the gap between scientific research and the general public, attracting over 4,000 visitors from Chania, Rethymno, and Heraklion.

Organized as part of the European STEPS project, the event included participation from the Technical University of Crete and the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research. The program featured interactive workshops, exhibitions, and cultural activities designed to engage all ages, with a specific focus on introducing children and young people to scientific processes.

Dr. Francesco Palazzio, representing the European Union, attended the event to visit laboratories and discuss science communication with researchers. Following the Research Night, the STEPS project will transition to the ‘Researchers at Schools’ initiative, where scientists will visit urban, semi-urban, and remote schools to conduct experiential learning labs and interactive sessions.
