University of Cyprus student forced to relocate due to accessibility issues
A mother has raised serious concerns regarding the accessibility of student housing at the University of Cyprus after her daughter, a student with physical disabilities, was unable to secure appropriate accommodation. The student, who uses a wheelchair and requires a constant companion for daily assistance, was forced to abandon her plans to study in Cyprus.
The family reported that despite initial information from a counselor suggesting the mother could reside with her daughter, the University later stated that parent-student cohabitation in dormitories was not permitted. After three weeks of seeking a solution and being referred between various university departments, the family was reportedly advised to seek private accommodation at a cost of approximately 600 euros per month.
As a result, the family relocated to Crete, where they stated a free, accessible room with the necessary facilities was provided. The incident has highlighted a perceived gap between institutional claims of inclusivity and the practical reality of accessibility for students with disabilities in higher education.
