University of Delhi hostel shortage prompts NHRC directive
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Delhi Chief Secretary and the University Grants Commission (UGC) to address the severe shortage of affordable hostel facilities for University of Delhi (DU) students. The Commission is treating the lack of residential facilities as a human rights issue, noting that inadequate housing places financial and well-being burdens on students.
This directive follows a tragic building collapse in South Delhi’s Satya Niketan area, where a boys’ paying guest (PG) facility called ‘Hostel Daze’ collapsed, resulting in seven deaths. The incident has highlighted the risks students face when relying on unregulated private accommodations.
Data reveals a significant disparity in university infrastructure: of the 91 colleges within the University of Delhi, only 20 offer hostel facilities. While the university serves approximately 250,000 students, there are only about 7,000 hostel seats available. Even in colleges with on-campus housing, such as Miranda House and Sri Venkateswara College, the capacity covers only a small fraction of the student population.
